Synthesis of next generation lubricants and additives used in thin films for:
- Perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) media
- High storage density magnetic tape
- Micro-Electro-mechanical Systems (MEMS)
Performance evaluation of new lubricants for both magnetic media and MEMS:
- Film composition, uniformity, and structure evaluation for single and multiple phase lubricants,
- Tribological and reliability testing,
- Testing varying lubricant compositions and their interfaces with different protective overcoat types such as diamond-like carbon and silicon nitride,
- Evaluation of the head disk interface for magnetic media using simple media stacks,
- Corrosion and environmental (temperature and humidity) testing
- Recommendations and guidelines for lubricant used in magnetic media and MEMS devices
- Added customer interaction with an emphasis on categorizing many of the new requests for lubricant functionality.
